Yoga Room

I Have you ever hit a slump? I have hit about a million in my life, and over come them as well! But lately I am feeling very different about life. I am really appreciating this season that I am in because I feel wiser, but I also see a lot of work that needs to be done if I want to relax and enjoy life. I am extremely high strung, but with depressive tendencies to withdraw from life. If something is not going well I sit on it. What really ifs bringing on this internal reflection is my morning routine. Every morning I hate life. i roll around in bed unaware of the ticking clock until BAM! I’ve got ten minutes to get dressed AND get to work. What is it about me that I can’t get out of bed when the first alarm goes off? Why to I resent getting up? When I do get up early I love the time I get to myself. There is just this moment between sleep and waking that is Jekyll and Hyde and I have GOT to change it. This, as well as the way I handle other things in my life: with resent and procrastination.

To help me I am trying to stay away from high impact activities and turn toward eastern philosophy. (I do want to start running again… as long as it’s not a stress trigger!)

I have been practicing yoga a lot lately with the help of the Down Dog App! It is fantastic for beginners or anyone really. I love this app because it puts together a yoga flow based on experience as well as time. You can also choose between a regular flow or restorative. ***Bonus points if you follow creator, Adrienne Kimberley, on Instagram!

Because I moved not too long ago, and my things have slowly trickled into the house, I have found myself overwhelmed by personal belongings. This move and new outlook have given me the opportunity to clear some clutter out of my immediate space and some things permanently. We will be adding on this year, then I will be able to give many of my things a permanent home and get rid of many others! I’m very excited for that time, but for now I decided I needed to clear things out of the spaces I spend time in.

In doing so I realized I had enough room for a yoga and meditation space! I have decided to decorate it in an eastern style with symbols starting with a mandala and Buddha statue. I am trying to be careful not to bring too many tiny decorations into the space. Things that are symbolic or useful only.

Here is my inspiration board!

yoga room 2.PNG

The tapestry was a hard decision to make. There are so, so many choices online, but I found the prices at urban outfitters to be a little too out there. I found this one at Jaipur Art Factory for 15-20 dollars. I just love the royal peacock colors. There is a hint of mustard, which is one of my old favorites. I was initially drawn to a light colored tapestry with yellow tones, but found it not to be traditional looking enough. I am forever also drawn to blue-greens! I found this mat, which at $100 is wayyyy more than I want to spend, at Houzz. It matches so perfectly and is bright enough to lighten up the room. I fear the dark tapestry will make the room too dark, but other decor elements can help and I would prefer a serene dark blue over red or orange any day.

The shelving unit I already own. The tapestry is a DIY from A Beautiful Mess! I have the cording, I just need to get the copper pipe. These pillows came form all over. They are here for visualization rather than being exact. I will purchase pillows that I come across. I have an aloe plant in the room, and I am considering getting another plant. The salt lamp is functional, as it purifies the air! The Buddha is symbolic and important in some peoples practices. The lantern is for ambiance and the basket is for storing blankets!

So, while it is starting to look a little cluttered, I think that all of these items are really functional. Pillows for meditating as well as color and texture. Salt lamp and plants for purification as well as bringing the grounding element of nature inside. The lantern to invite a soft glow into nighttime practices. A basket to keep the room tidy. A mirror to expand the room. A wall hanging for a personal touch and to bring more white into the room. A mandala tapestry and Buddha for symbolic and aesthetic purposes.

Capture5

Here is the progress I have made and where I want to place some things. The craft corner of the room is still pretty out of control, but the sewing table top is clear now! We took the bookcase to the basement because all it was doing was allowing me to clutter things up. It was worse off than in the first room picture above!

Top left: Inside the O is where I plan to place a table for the salt lamp and the Buddha. I will also be looking for a new pot for my aloe plant. I have the wall hanging planned of course, but I’m undecided on art for the time being.

Top right: The tapestry! To the lower right of the mirror I will place the lantern and basket.

Bottom left: I am dreaming up some mandala or lotus DIY art for the empty wall. This space is so much more clear. I had a lot of little things on my desk that I moved away.

Bottom right: I want to find some cute wall storage to keep my crafts organized. I also need to find something to keep my school binders in. The black amp is there for good. It is my boyfriends and it really has no other home. The box is full of crafts that i may try to find a better looking container for.

So there you have it! From stressed out to yoga-fied! My feelings and decor plans all in one bundle, haha.

Thank you for letting me share a little bit more about myself and my struggles with anxiety. I change decor like most women cut their hair when needing a change! I can’t wait to share the final product! This room is moving fast in comparison to the rest of the home! And you can see I’m leaning towards a more “World Market” look rather than “farm house”. I still love that I can incorporate elements of both and more into my style!

Are you into any big life changes or healing practices?

“I’m ready to slow down. I’m ready to simplify. I’m ready to receive… While yoga has awakened me to my potential and seen me through some dramatic changes, yoga also reminds me that doing less enables me to receive more. I’m open, I’m listening, I’m ready” – Adrienne Kimberley

Gold Dust Woman

My birthday has come and gone (5/20) and SO much happened in that week that I can’t even really fully tell you about everything, but I can start with the most exciting part of it…

I bought a motorcycle!

image

After learning how to ride and being told I should be on a 650 I naturally went for a 1200…HA! But really this all happened because we found out Harley was wanting us to get rid of the ’13s and ’14s we had and the one I have been lusting after happened to be a 2013! So I got a really goo deal on it and the guys and Michael helped set me up with mid-controls so that I can reach everything, hehe.

image

Each time I’m on it I find myself focusing on a skill to work on. You know when something doesn’t sound right or smooth.

I’ve ridden some in town and mostly on country highways.

image

I’m thankful to have found another female rider at the same level of experience as I am! We probably would have never normally found each other as friends, yet here we are making plans to ride. I owe a lot of thanks to the guys in my life that have helped me stay going.

image

They were pretty exhausted trying to get my friend’s sporty started.

Shes my Gold Dust Woman because of Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks. She’s gold yes, but she’s a gypsy and a heart-breaker.

I’m doing my best to get my skills down so that I am able to attend an all female bike rally this year or next. I never would have thought I would love this hobby so much, but it’s been great to me.

Anyway! This is my ball-and-chain for the next 4-5 years! Ooodahlally!

Another Vegan Update

Today is day 21 I believe. This is a special day because it is suppose to mark the amount of time that something takes to become a habit. I want to talk a little bit more about my experience and feelings rather than exactly what I’ve been eating, meal-for-meal. Though, I will share some nice pictures with you.

image

I have not been perfect. While trying to eat vegan I have eaten eggs and bacon, an ice cream bar, and a bratwurst. And I’ll tell you it was a let down further and further each time until day 19 when I said to Michael, “I don’t want to do the no-meat thing anymore, forget it.” And the next day I continued to try to eat like a vegan. I guess what this means is that you’re going to make mistakes. Not everyone can quit cold turkey.

image

I personally think that a wise vegan will slowly take things on and do lots of research. There are so many areas of this lifestyle. For one I am having to cook a lot more, and I am really not very good at it in the first place. This is taking a learning curve. I get flustered easily in the kitchen because things are hot and need chopped. I am learning to sloooowwww down. Another facet about this lifestyle is not only learning how to cook differently, but eat differently as well. Nutrition is so important and it is SO different from what I am used to. I understand that protein builds muscles and you need a certain amount, but then I start freaking out about how many carbs I’m eating or whether I’m getting enough veggies and vitamins, or, or…

You have to stop. You have to take things slowly. Some meals are going to turn out nasty. Some meals are going to have too much rice/wheat. It’s ok, that’s where you learn.

image

I personally have been really bad about getting any fitness in this last week. I have not gained or lost any weight, but I started to feel awful again. I don’t feel the vegan glow because I am out of balance. And even that’s ok! It’s all about learning and being gentle with yourself knowing what works for you and what you need to change. Every day is so different and unique from the next. What is going on socially or with the weather can affect the choices you make, or emergency deadlines, or great opportunities. Life is crazy and amazing so embrace it.

image

I’m trying to learn to make the cooking process gentle. I am normally a bull in a china shop because, like I said, there are a lot of things going on and I want to get it done NOW! It’s definitely a feeling of defeat when you take 2 hours to make a meal and the whole things gets eaten in five minutes with NO leftovers. But it happens!

image

I have been using the Thug Kitchen cookbook to help me out with meals. I am so excited to purchase more vegan cookbooks, but I’m definitely going to work through quite a few more of these recipes before I do. I really loved the Vietnamese noodle bowls, but I want to find a different dressing. And that is the perfect example of learning to cook. What do you like about the meal? the cooking process? What works and what doesn’t work for you? Guys, I am 27 and still learning how to cook. I have never been a comfort food staples kind of girl. Though, we did get on a chili, spaghetti, and casserole kick there for a time!

Another thing you have to take into consideration is you significant other and family. Thankfully Michael will try something that I make, but I am going to have to be willing to eat conventionally from time-too-time unless Michael begins to change his stance on things. Something I can always do for something like spaghetti is to keep the meat and sauce separate until it is served. I can also use non-dairy butter and other substitutes in conventional recipes. It’s really all about balance other wise you will drive yourself crazy! And this whole thing is about compassion and advocacy! No advocate ever succeeded by being crazy obnoxious.

I’m at day 21 guys. I don’t know if I will actually see day 42, but as of today I know where I stand. And I am proud of the progress and impact I have made. If the numbers are right, at one month I will have saved:

Gallons of water:33,000
Sq.ft of Forest:900
Animal Lives: 30
lbs of Grain: 1,200
lbs of Co2: 600
(Give or take a bratwurst…)

The LOFT addiction is growing fierce friends, but seriously LOFT. Stop it with all these adorable dandelions! I just can’t!

I currently own the first top, and the second is on it’s way. Just look at that ruffle! Obviously I had to won both…!

Then there’s the dress…

imageService (2)

My flapper dreams come true. This will be in the next batch i order I think. I really don’t think I could wear this to school, but regardless I have to have it in my wardrobe!

And the rest:

I’m just in love with this cute little print and all the different silhouettes theyve created with it.

While checking out my order last night, something glitched and the items I had deleted went back into my bag and I ended up purchasing twice as many dollars worth as I wanted to…!!! BUT this gives me the opportunity to try on what I like and return what I don’t like or what doesn’t fit. Hoping some cardigans will work out, I chose some FUN colors! I’m definitely aiming for the polished art teacher look. I’m still trying to bulk up my professional wardrobe with truly amazing pieces.

Can’t wait to share!

Oh, and happy like 8 days vegan!

5 Days as a Vegan

Today is my sixth day of eating like a vegan. I would like to say that it has been all whole foods, but it hasn’t, and there have been a few minor errors, like in the first day with eating a slice of homemade bread, that was gift, that may have had some butter and an egg in it, but I’m not looking at that. I’m looking at the major decisions I made in my diet, because I am NOT going to look a the small mishaps, but rather the big steps I have taken.

Day 2:

Breakfast: Chia pudding (chia, almond milk, raspberries), Kashi vegan blueberry waffles, Silk yogurt. Lunch: Slice of oat bread, Buddha bowl. Dinner: Protein shake, Daiya Alfredoimageimageimage

image

imageimage

Day 3:

Breakfast: Breakfast Quinoa with almond milk, lemon, and blueberries. Lunch: Daiya Alfredo. Snack: Larabar, Strawberries. Dinner:…? I don’t remember! I do remember polishing off the coconut ice cream though!

image

Day 4:

Breakfast: The same breakfast quinoa. Lunch: Veggie Hummus wrap. Snack: Protein shake, plums. Dinner: Daiya White cheddar.

image

image

Day 5:

Breakfast: Ezekiel bread with vegan butter and jam. First lunch: Leftover mac, Larabar. Second lunch: Breakfast quinoa with blueberries and strawberries. Snack: Banana. Dinner: Vegan mac with veggie/nutritional yeast sauce.

image

So far I have started out my morning with chia pudding and fresh berries and two slices of Ezekiel bread with “butter” and preserves!

It is safe to say that I am really feeling a difference. Everything is still kind of weird because it will take a long time to adjust to the idea of “no dairy” and just eating differently, seeing food differently. The first 2 days were the hardest. I was hungry all the time and felt like crap. My body had had enough and was in shock because I wasn’t feeding it the same, but day 3 was a day off and I was able to get the sleep I needed and take things slow and after that I started noticing a difference. It hasn’t cured my morning problem yet. I am Jekyll and Hyde in the morning. Almost every day I carry the regret of not waking up on time, but I am someone else in my sleep, someone desperate for more rest like their life depends on it, then I snap out of it, only lately after snapping out of it I have pep! I haven’t drank any coffee for a week either!

So this is my testament to you. Give it a REAL try for more than one day. The Meatless Monday is a joke. This is the real deal. Get over you own tastes buds that you have been spoiling your whole life! Get your brain off of sugar!

Watch Forks Over Knives and Cowspiracy, read The Omnivore’s Dilema, and it will change they way you make food decisions.

Thug Kitchen is on it’s way to me and I have a list of other cookbooks that I can’t wait to get my hands on!

A Plant Based Day

I decided to try a day of plant based eating. I have gained some weight in my tummy and hips and have been eating like a maniac. (Cake for breakfast AND dessert?!)   It’s high time to whip out the running shoes, weights, and yoga mat and change up this diet!

For breakfast, 8:30, I had Kashi blueberry vegan waffles and So Delicious yogurt. This wasn’t very filling but I decided to cope with water and the understanding that I needed to be a little bit hungry after eating like a pig. Yes you read that, I spent some time hungry today as punishment and I lived to tell about it.

image

At 11:00 I was famished so I scarfed down an amazing wrap from TaDah! This wrap has so many tasty good-for-you things about it and at 430 calories was good to keep me going for a while. At about 1:00 I ate a mocha Larabar.

image

By 4:30 I was hungry again, and I had been fighting work duties and things to get to some food… you know how it goes. I brought leftovers of my Buddha Bowl dinner: Quinoa, garlic black beans, lettuce greens, light fries, tomato, cucumber, and an AMAZING avocado sauce!!!

Avocado Dressing:

1 avocado, juice of 1 lemon, and these next items to taste: clove of garlic, black pepper, salt, rice milk.

Blend until smooth and creamy.

SOOOOOOO good! even on the fries!

Since I ended up not finishing that meal until 5:15, work you know… I was definitely good until work was over, but as soon as I got home I dug into a mango! Michael hasn’t been eating dinner because of work. I don’t ask too many questions, but it’s usually because they feed him a big lunch and/or he’s so worn out and over heated hes just not hungry. So I look at it as a way to get experiment-y! But the mango was an awesome treat and gave me some sugar to get me pumped up for a little workout. Afterward I drank a plant based protein shake with almond milk and fresh berries. Garden of Life: Fit. It was actually tasty despite the awful reviews. Will be getting lots more this evening!

Before I went home to do my workout, I stopped at GNC and the grocery store. At GNC, to my surprise, I found goji berries and the brand of protein powder I was looking for and an overwhelming amount of other vegan options! At the grocery store I grabbed more quinoa, fresh fruit and avo, peanut butter, tortillas, humus, La Croix sparkling water, some vegan Daiya Alfredo Mac O.M.G!!!! I was so sad when I was thinking about chicken Alfredo and bam! There it was! I hope it’s yummy.

And at the very end of the day, after workout/proteinshake/helping move furniture I cut off a slice of oat bread that was given to us by Michael’s mom… And yes I’m sure there was butter and sugar in the recipe, but let’s not focus too much on it.

This was a heavy day for me. It was full of work nonsense… making the battle for meat and dairy seem even more cruel. If I do this, how am I going to do it?! How am I going to get enough protein and make my macro profiles good for building muscles and burning fat without eating a ton of soy? That’s my biggest question here. So I will continue to experiment with vegan meals and protein powders and snacking on fruits and veggies over cake and candy and in the meantime I will research and not loose my mind if I need to eat a traditional meal… Vegan is a lifestyle, but I see it as grey. To be the perfect vegan you would need to live on a different vegan-only planet. The people-to-people connection on this planet is too great to be absolutely perfect, so I won’t give myself a lot of heat over a lapse. It’s a learning and habit process! But , really, thank heavens for fruit and so many delicious vegan breakfasts and desserts. We can have that at least!

I will also note that I’m not promising myself to this lifestyle yet, I’m only trying things out at this point.

But be happy to know that I have already started Day 2 with a round of yoga, chia pudding with raspberries, kashi waffles, and silk yogurt!

Teacher Proof

This may be one of the most odd posts I ever write, but I think there are several reasons I am doing so.

What happened was: I spilled a drop of foundation on my brand new LOFT top. “Oh, boyyyyy… Who CARES?!” they’re thinking, but let me share a lesson with you all.

image

This is the face this top gave me before I realized what had happened. Just sheer joy.

I should not have felt the whirlwind of emotions that I did, but I did! This stuff wasn’t coming out. This had happened to me maybe 8 years before, and one reason I switched to Bare Minerals. I switched to Bare Minerals liquid because of the brown powder mess I was constantly wiping up… Anyway.

When I got home I started treating it with Shout. NOPE.

Treated it with Shout over night. NOPE.

Tried treating it with Clorox 2. NOPE.

I could see just MINIMAL progress, so something in me decided to keep trying.

I did a lot of Googling as well.

I picked up a Tide-2-Go, OXI-MAX, Bleach, Hydrogen Peroxide, even Ammonia… I was desperate and curious.

Tide-2-Go wasn’t working and the marker tip freaked me out that I would scrub it all stretched out. Oxi over night made the most progress I had seen, but came to a halt. Then I got crazy trying the peroxide and ammonia… NOPE!

I had finally lost it… So to try bleach.

image

To my surprise it didn’t harm it at all. I started with 1 minute soaks… nothing… 5 min soaks… nothing… FORGET IT! I whipped out the Tide pen again and scrubbed. soaked in bleach and scrubbeddddd. Soaked in bleach and SCRUBBEDDDDDD!

image

And it went away!

Almost completely. Only I can really see where it was.

At first there was a strange smudging of the fibers where I had rubbed it so hard, but nothing I didn’t think I couldn’t live with. So I blow dried it and ironed it and even that went away!

image

You are asking why I am so obsessed over a tiny little spot at the bottom of the shirt that no one would really even care about… Well for one I had spent $50 on it, it was an important part of a vacation memory, and I had been wearing it for the first time when it happened. AND because I’m a bull in a china shop and it sometimes gets me down that I am so naturally careless, but I think it’s because I am proud of pursuing a remedy rather than settling for a stained shirt that is sub-par or even buying a whole new one.

image

The most important thing this shows me is just how resilient this shirt is and that it is definitely teacher approved! Thank you LOFT for designing a shirt that can withstand bleached and being stretched out!
